iPhone Video to Windows: Make Every File Play & Edit

1. Transfers that secretly convert — the Keep Originals switch
Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC: 'Keep Originals' moves true HEVC/HEIC files; 'Automatic' lossy-converts to JPG/H.264 mid-transfer. VLC (free) plays HEVC MOV perfectly. Microsoft's HEVC Video Extension (~$1) enables native Photos/Movies & TV playback. Or batch-convert arrivals to H.264 MP4 once — permanent, plays on everything including grandma's laptop. Pick one; all three beat re-shooting in Most Compatible out of frustration.
3. ProRes clips bigger than your free space
~6 GB/minute at 4K ProRes; 128GB iPhones cap ProRes at 1080p30 for self-defense. Transcode ProRes to H.264/H.265 for everything except active edits, and never message raw ProRes — a 10-minute clip can top 50 GB.
4. HDR video playing grey and flat
Dolby Vision metadata means nothing to SDR Windows players: brights clamp, colors wash. Shoot SDR for Windows-bound clips, play HDR through VLC's tone-mapping, or convert to SDR H.264 MP4 for universal files. See our HDR guide for the full why.

Set the camera once: High Efficiency vs Most Compatible
High Efficiency (HEVC/HEIC): half the storage, needs the arrival-batch below. Most Compatible (H.264/JPG): plays everywhere, eats storage. Rule: full phone or ProRAW/ProRes shooter → High Efficiency + batch convert; Windows-only life with no conversion habit → Most Compatible. Either is correct once — the pain comes from mixing them unknowingly.
