RAW vs Raster: Understanding Camera Files vs Finished Images
Your camera says “RAW” and also “JPEG.” Your design client asks for a “raster.” Someone tells you to shoot RAW for better quality — but the files are huge and nothing opens them. Here is what RAW and raster actually mean, why photographers need both, and when you should convert one to the other.
First: these are not two competing formats — they are two stages
The common confusion is thinking RAW and raster are rivals, like MP3 vs WAV. They are not. RAW is a camera's unprocessed sensor data. A raster image is any finished image made of pixels. A RAW file is not even viewable as a picture until it is processed. The relationship is like a film negative vs a printed photo: the negative contains all the information; the print is what people actually see.
Every photo you have ever seen on a screen is a raster image — JPG, PNG, TIFF, WebP, AVIF are all raster formats. RAW (CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW, DNG, and dozens of others) is the camera manufacturer's proprietary capture format. You shoot RAW, process it into a raster image, and deliver that.
RAW — the digital negative
Unprocessed data straight from the camera sensor: every pixel's raw luminance value, before white balance, color grading, sharpening, or compression. It is the complete record of what the sensor captured, typically 12–14 bits of data per channel, stored in a manufacturer-specific format.
Raster — the finished image
Any image defined by a grid of pixels — JPG, PNG, TIFF, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP. The data has been processed, color-graded, and compressed into a viewable file. Raster files are what you share, print, publish, and archive for delivery.
What RAW actually gives you
The reason photographers shoot RAW is editing headroom. Because the file retains 12–14 bits of data per channel and no in-camera processing, you can dramatically adjust exposure, white balance, highlights, and shadows in post without destroying image quality. A JPG has already been compressed to 8 bits and color-graded by the camera — pushing its exposure in an editor introduces banding and noise quickly.

Raster vs vector — a different axis
“Raster” is often contrasted with “vector,” not RAW. Vector images (SVG, AI, EPS) are mathematical shapes that scale infinitely without losing quality — used for logos and illustrations. Raster images are fixed grids of pixels that blur when enlarged beyond their native resolution. RAW vs raster is a capture-to-delivery relationship; raster vs vector is a rendering-technology difference. Both are worth knowing.

Should you shoot RAW?
Yes — serious photography
RAW
Portraits, weddings, landscapes, commercial work — any shoot where exposure is uncertain or post-processing is expected. RAW gives you the data to fix mistakes and craft the final image.

RAW + JPG
Most cameras can save RAW and JPG simultaneously. Use the JPG for instant sharing and previews, keep the RAW as the master for serious edits. Storage cost is the only downside.

Common questions
Is RAW better quality than JPG?
RAW contains more data, but it is not automatically 'better' until processed. A well-exposed, correctly processed JPG can look identical to a RAW-derived image. The difference appears in editing: RAW recovers blown highlights, lifts shadows, and adjusts white balance far more gracefully than JPG. RAW is more capable, not inherently more beautiful.
Can I open RAW files in any image viewer?
No. RAW files are proprietary per camera brand — Canon CR2/CR3, Nikon NEF, Sony ARW, Fuji RAF. Windows and macOS have partial support, but most viewers show a processed preview, not the actual sensor data. You need a RAW editor (Adobe Lightroom, Capture One, Darktable, RawTherapee) to develop RAW files into viewable images.
What is DNG? Should I convert my RAW files to it?
DNG (Digital Negative) is Adobe's open, standardized RAW format. DNG also embeds previews and can be slightly smaller. The tradeoff is extra conversion time and losing manufacturer-specific metadata in rare cases.
Is a 16-bit TIFF a RAW file?
No — TIFF is a raster format, even at 16-bit. RAW captures unprocessed sensor data; TIFF is a fully processed image stored without compression. 16-bit TIFF is the highest-fidelity delivery format for print, but it is still a finished raster, not a digital negative.
