GIF stores every frame as a 256-color image with zero motion prediction — 1987 technology. Video codecs store only what changesbetween frames in full color. Why are GIF files so big?

1987 compression: full 256-color frames, no motion prediction. Modern codecs store only frame differences — 10–20× smaller for the same clip.

What should I use instead of GIF?

MP4 for sharing and memes, MP4/WebM in <video> tags for web animation, animated WebP for transparency. Nobody notices except in load speed.

Can GIFs have sound?
