ProRes vs DNxHR: Which Intermediate Codec Should You Edit With?

Delivery codecs (H.264, H.265) are built small. Editing codecs are built smooth. Here's what intermediates are, how Apple's and Avid's families compare flavor by flavor, and which one belongs in your timeline.

What is an intermediate codec?

Delivery codecs compress across frames (interframe): great for size, terrible for scrubbing, because decoding frame 500 may require frames 490–510. Intermediate (mezzanine) codecs compress each frame alone (intraframe) at high bitrates — huge files, but every frame is instantly seekable and survives repeated exports. You transcode camera footage into ProRes/DNxHR to edit, then export out to H.264 for delivery.

ProRes vs DNxHR: the short answer

Mac + Final Cut → ProRes. Windows or cross-platform → either; DNxHR if you want zero Apple anything. At matched tiers the quality is effectively identical — this choice is about ecosystem and workflow, and both families are free to encode in 2026 (HandBrake 1.11+ ships both encoders).

Bitrates approximate for 1080p30; 4K multiplies ~4×. DNxHD is the older HD-only sibling of DNxHR — use DNxHR for all new work.

Head to head: where each wins

  • Mac ubiquity → ProRes. Every Mac app speaks it; Final Cut is ProRes-native end to end.
  • Windows neutrality → DNxHR (or ProRes — both work, but DNxHR was born cross-platform). Premiere and DaVinci read/write both on all OSes.
  • Alpha channels → ProRes 4444 (industry default) or DNxHR 444 — a tie, pick your NLE's favorite.
  • HDR finishing → DNxHR HQX (12-bit) or ProRes 4444 XQ; both carry HDR metadata in modern NLEs.
  • File size at matched tiers → effectively tied; anyone claiming a big gap is comparing mismatched tiers.

Never deliver intermediates

Five minutes of 1080p ProRes 422 ≈ 6 GB; the same timeline exported H.264 ≈ 300 MB with no visible difference on playback. Masters stay ProRes/DNxHR for re-edits; everything any human watches leaves as H.264/H.265 MP4. For the delivery side, see our compression methods guide.

Stuttering timeline? Use proxies, not a new computer

Proxies are lightweight stand-ins (ProRes Proxy, DNxHR LB, or even H.264) you cut with, auto-swapped for full-resolution masters at export. Both Premiere (ingest presets) and DaVinci (media management → generate proxies) build and relink them semi-automatically. Can Windows use ProRes?

Yes — Premiere, DaVinci, FFmpeg, and HandBrake 1.11+ read and write it. Only niche ProRes RAW/FCPX workflows stay Mac-only.

DNxHD is HD-only legacy; DNxHR scales to 4K/8K. All new work: DNxHR.
