H.264 vs H.265: Which Codec Should You Use?

The two most important video codecs compared side by side — file size, quality, compatibility, encoding speed, and when to use each one. Plus AV1 and VP9 explained so you understand the full picture.

What is a video codec?

A codec (coder/decoder) is the algorithm that compresses raw video into a manageable file and decompresses it for playback. Without codecs, one minute of 1080p video would be about 10 GB — completely impractical for storage, streaming, or sharing.

Think of codecs like different file formats for video. Just as you choose between PNG and JPG for images based on quality vs. file size tradeoffs, you choose between H.264, H.265, and AV1 for video.

Codec ≠ container format

People often confuse codecs with container formats. The codec is how the video stream is compressed (H.264, H.265). The containeris the file wrapper that holds the video + audio + metadata (MP4, MOV, MKV). An MP4 file can contain H.264 or H.265 video — the container doesn't determine the codec.

Here's what the file size difference looks like for a typical 5-minute video at various resolutions:

Based on typical quality-preserving bitrates. Actual file sizes vary by content complexity — fast motion needs higher bitrates.

The key tradeoff: time vs. space

H.265 takes roughly 2-3× longer to encodethan H.264 at the same resolution. For a 5-minute video, that might mean 30 seconds vs. 90 seconds. For a 2-hour 4K film, it could mean 1 hour vs. 3 hours. If you're archiving a large library, the storage savings are worth the time. If you're exporting quick social media clips, stick with H.264.

What about AV1 and VP9?

H.264 and H.265 aren't the only codecs. Two others are increasingly important:

VP9

Google's open-source codec, comparable to H.265 in efficiency. YouTube uses VP9 for all videos above 1080p (and popular 1080p videos). You don't need to export in VP9 — YouTube converts your upload automatically. Not widely supported outside Google's ecosystem.

AV1

The newest major codec (2018), ~30% more efficient than H.265 and completely royalty-free. YouTube, Netflix, and modern browsers increasingly use AV1. The main drawback: encoding is very slow (5-10× slower than H.264). AV1 is the future, but H.264 remains the practical present for most creators.

How to choose: a simple decision guide

Are you uploading to YouTube, Instagram, or TikTok?

→ Use H.264. Universal compatibility, fastest platform processing.

Are you archiving footage for long-term storage?

→ Use H.265. Half the storage space at identical quality.

Are you delivering files to a client?

→ Use H.264 unless they specifically request H.265. Don't assume their software can decode H.265.

Are you working with 4K or 8K footage?

→ Use H.265. H.264 file sizes become impractical at 4K+.

Do you need the absolute smallest file at the best quality?

→ Use H.265 (or AV1 if encoding time doesn't matter).

Are you unsure about your audience's devices?
