Formatif AI vs Topaz: The Local Alternative to Gigapixel & Video AI

Topaz is the quality benchmark for local AI image enhancement, and this page is not going to pretend otherwise. What it will do is answer the question its reputation hides: if you want AI upscaling, denoising, face restoration and video cleanup without cloud credits, do you need to buy three applications — or does one suffice?

Pick in ten seconds

  • Choose Formatif AI — You want image, video, background and object AI in a single Windows app for one small one-time price, instead of three applications at $99 to $299 each.

  • Stay with Topaz — Its photo and face quality is the benchmark, it runs on macOS, and it has video features Formatif AI does not — frame interpolation and stabilisation.

  • Use both — Topaz for hero shots that need maximum quality, Formatif AI for chained folder jobs where volume and consistency matter more than the last 5%.

Full table below, or jump to the verdict.

The short answer

Topaz is the better choice for best-in-class photo and face quality, deeper per-model control, macOS support, and video features Formatif AI lacks — frame interpolation and stabilisation. Formatif AI is the better choice if you want image, video, background and object enhancement in one Windows app for $12.95 one-time, instead of $99–$299 per Topaz application.

Stated plainly: this is not a quality contest. By the measurement that matters most — how a photograph looks after enhancement — Topaz is the tool with the stronger reputation, and any comparison page that claims otherwise is selling rather than comparing. The real difference is structure: Topaz splits AI enhancement across three specialist applications, and Formatif AI consolidates it into one.

Where Topaz wins

Four things Topaz does that Formatif AI either does worse or does not do at all.

Photo and face quality

This is Topaz's home ground. Years of model training on real photographic degradation — faces, text, compression artefacts, print scans — have produced the most reliable one-click results in the category. If your standard is the best possible output from a single click, this row alone settles the question.

macOS support

All three Topaz applications run on macOS. Formatif AI is Windows-only today. For a Mac-based studio there is nothing to weigh: Topaz is the option that exists.

Video features beyond upscaling

Topaz Video AI handles frame interpolation for slow motion, video stabilisation and deinterlacing alongside upscaling. Formatif AI covers upscaling and denoising. If you shoot slow-motion or stabilise handheld footage as routine work, that gap is decisive.

Depth of control and pro integration

Topaz exposes multiple models per task and lets you tune strength and settings per image, and its applications slot into Lightroom and Photoshop workflows as plugins. Formatif AI deliberately hides that complexity behind named tools — which is an advantage for some, and a limitation for anyone who wants to steer the model.

Where Formatif AI wins

Formatif AI does not out-model Topaz. It competes on how the work is packaged, priced and chained.

One app, not three

Image enhancement, object and scene work, and video restoration live in a single Windows application under one licence. Topaz divides the same ground across Photo, Gigapixel and Video AI.

Scene tools Topaz does not offer

Background removal, foreground isolation, object removal, sky replacement and bokeh creation are first-class tools here. They are adjacent to Topaz's focus rather than part of it.

Chain the models, then run a folder

The Workflow Builder sequences operations — remove background, upscale 2×, then denoise — and applies the whole chain across a directory rather than one image at a time.

One-time price, updates included

$12.95 once, with lifetime updates and no cloud credits, because inference runs on your GPU. Topaz is one-time too, but with an optional annual upgrade plan for new versions.

If you want to see the scene tools in a real workflow, the sky replacement for property listings walkthrough and the bulk product photo guide both use them on folders, not single images.

The price maths

Approximate one-time prices as of late 2026. Topaz discounts regularly and occasionally bundles its applications, so treat these as ballpark figures and check the current numbers yourself.

ProductApprox. one-timeCovers
Topaz Gigapixel~$99Image upscaling
Topaz Photo~$199Denoise, sharpen, upscaling, face recovery
Topaz Video AI~$299Video upscaling, interpolation, stabilisation
Formatif AI$12.95Image and video upscaling, denoise, face restore, scene tools

Two honest caveats. First, if you only need image upscaling, the relevant comparison is Formatif AI against Topaz Gigapixel alone at roughly $99 — not against the whole suite. Second, the cheapest option in this category is free: Upscayl is open source, runs entirely offline, and handles clean photos well. Price is not what Formatif AI wins on. Scope is.

Three apps vs one app: why the structure matters

Topaz's separation is not an accident — it lets each application specialise. Gigapixel focuses on upscaling and print; Photo on restoration-grade cleanup; Video AI on temporal processing, where models must reason across frames rather than inside one. Specialists get better at their one job.

The cost of that structure shows up in a different place: the seams. A job that needs a background removed, then upscaled, then denoised crosses application boundaries, and so does the file management, naming and quality control. On one image that is trivial. On four hundred product photos it becomes the actual work.

Specialist apps fit when

  • Each image gets individual attention
  • You tune models rather than accept defaults
  • Output quality is the deciding factor
  • Volume is tens of files, not thousands

One consolidated app fits when

  • The same chain runs on every file
  • Background, sky or object work is part of the job
  • Photo and video AI need to sit side by side
  • The budget is one purchase, not three

The part that is not about either competitor: local vs cloud

Both Topaz's desktop applications and Formatif AI process locally, so if your only concern is “does this upload my photos,” both pass. That is worth saying clearly rather than implying Topaz sends your files somewhere.

The meaningful difference is direction. Topaz now runs a separate cloud generative product, Topaz Wonder, on a credit or subscription model — so generative enhancement at Topaz lives in the cloud, alongside its local desktop tools. Formatif AI has no cloud tier at all: every model runs on your GPU, there are no credits to buy, and there is no account state that could route a file off your machine. Activation and licence checks need the network; processing never does.

No upload before or after inference
Models run on your own GPU
No credits, no per-image metering
Safe for client media under NDA

Practical requirement: Formatif AI needs a DirectX 12 compatible GPU — NVIDIA GTX 900 series or newer, or AMD RX 400 series or newer — with 6 GB+ VRAM recommended. Integration graphics will not run the models. More on the offline vs cloud breakdown.

Which should you pick?

Stay with Topaz if…

photo quality is the deciding factor, you work on macOS, you rely on frame interpolation or stabilisation, or you want per-model control and Lightroom/Photoshop plugin integration. None of those are marginal concerns, and Formatif AI does not match them.

Choose Formatif AI if…

your work is folder-shaped and crosses media types. One licence covers image upscaling, denoising, face restoration, background and object removal, sky replacement and video cleanup, chained in sequence and run across a directory — for a fraction of what two or three Topaz apps cost.

Use both if…

you want maximum quality where it is visible and speed everywhere else. A common split is Topaz for the handful of hero images in a project and Formatif AI for the hundreds of supporting files that need consistent, unattended processing.

One suggestion before you spend anything: take three files — a clean photo, a noisy low-light shot, and a face you want at 2× — and run them through both on trials. Topaz and Formatif AI both offer free evaluation, and twenty minutes of your own files is worth more than every comparison table on the internet, this one included.

Formatif AI vs Topaz FAQ

Is Formatif AI a good Topaz Gigapixel alternative?

It depends what you are optimising for. For maximum one-click photo quality, Topaz Gigapixel remains the benchmark and we are not claiming to beat it. As an alternative, Formatif AI competes on scope and price: image upscaling, denoising, face restoration, background and object removal, sky replacement and video upscaling in one Windows app for one small one-time price, instead of three separate applications.

Is Formatif AI's upscaling as good as Topaz?

We do not claim parity, and you should not take a vendor's word for it either. Topaz has spent years training models and its reputation for detail and face recovery is deserved. Our honest advice is to run the same three files — a clean photo, a noisy low-light shot, and a face at 2× — through both on the free trial and judge the outputs yourself. That is a 20-minute test and it beats any comparison table, including this one.

Do I need to buy Topaz Photo, Gigapixel and Video AI separately?

Yes. Topaz Photo, Topaz Gigapixel and Topaz Video AI are three separate applications with separate prices, typically $99 to $299 each, and Topaz periodically bundles them. If your work spans photos and video, you are buying two or three products. Formatif AI covers image and video enhancement in a single licence.

Does Topaz upload my images to the cloud?

Its desktop applications — Topaz Photo, Gigapixel and Video AI — process images locally, so no. The distinction worth knowing is direction of travel: Topaz's newer generative offering, Topaz Wonder, is a separate cloud product with a credit or subscription model. If keeping generative enhancement entirely off the network matters to you, that split is relevant. Formatif AI has no cloud tier at all.

Does Formatif AI work on macOS?

No. Formatif AI currently runs on Windows 10/11 (64-bit) only. If you work on a Mac, Topaz is the straightforward recommendation because all three of its applications support macOS. There is no point waiting for Formatif AI on macOS if you need the work done this month.

Can Formatif AI upscale video?

Yes — Resolution Boost handles video upscaling and the Video Denoiser cleans noise. What it does not do is frame interpolation for slow motion or video stabilisation, both of which Topaz Video AI offers. If those two features are core to your work rather than occasional, Video AI is the correct purchase.

Does Formatif AI require a subscription?

No. Formatif AI is a one-time purchase with lifetime updates included, and no cloud credits because inference runs on your own GPU. The only ongoing cost is electricity. That is the clearest structural difference between the two: Topaz is one-time plus an optional annual upgrade plan, while Formatif includes updates.

Can I use Formatif AI and Topaz together?

Yes, and it is a sensible split. Many people keep Topaz for images where quality is the deciding factor and use Formatif AI for chained folder work — background removal, then upscaling, then denoising across a whole directory — where consistency and throughput matter more than the last few percent of detail.

Test it on your three hardest files.

Formatif AI is $12.95 one-time with a 3-day full-featured trial — and the trial runs the whole model set, so you can compare against Topaz on your own images before deciding. Both editions together are $16.95.

Topaz is a genuinely excellent product and its desktop apps process locally — this page exists to help you pick, not to talk you out of it.
